Polymeric Materials Processing Laboratory

Polymeric materials processing laboratory deals with a pilot plant reproducing according a small (lab) scale industrial devices and machineries employed in the production and recycling of polymer, composite and nanocomposite materials other than component and prototypes based on the abive mentioned materials.

The Twin screw extruder is suitable for the materials processing when an important effect of mixing is required, particularly for thermoplastic matrixes and polymeric blends.

The injection moulding machine could be used both with thermoplastic homopolymers and with composite and thermoplastic matrix blends. Using these apparatus it is possible to reproduce and optimise the procedures of injection and extrusion of the thermoplastic polymers and thermoplastic matrix composite.

The hot plates press could be used both for the compression moulding of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymer, other than the production of composites based on these matrices.

The Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) Hypaject MKII is used for the processing of thermosetting matrix composites. This device also allows the degassing through a system of aspiration. Being equipped with heating devices and temperature control as well as temperature controlled moulds, materials and components can be produced following appropriate cure and post-cure cycles.

The vacuum pump Vacmobiles 20/2 being able to reach very small pressure levels (up to 10 mbar) and wide air flow (18 m3/h), allows to produce, other than small sample for testing, also prototypes and wide dimension products. Being portable, it allows to easily operate into the client and collaborator processing structures.
